Recreation in Twain Harte

Twain Harte
Twain Harte locally has hiking/walking trails (short and long), a golf course, fishing, golf, tennis, and miniature golf (spring to early fall only). There's a park with children's play equipment. There's a public swimming pool in the summer. Even some of these more ordinary things have a different feel to them when you are surrounded by tall pine trees and the smell of the forest.

About 5 miles east of Twain Harte is Lyons Lake, with hiking and fishing, open May-November.

The Hwy 108 Corridor East
From Twain Harte east Hwy 108 climbs into the 4000 to 5000 foot elevation quickly. You can take a scenic drive to Pinecrest Lake (20 miles) or, further, to Kennedy Meadows (48 miles). You'll see mountain lakes, unusual basalt rock formations, and the Stanislaus River. There is fishing at Pinecrest Lake and other lakes and rivers. There is hiking on the trail that goes around Pinecrest Lake and many other areas, and backpacking, with a major wilderness area trailhead at Kennedy Meadows.

In the winter, there is skiing, snowboarding, snowplay, and snowshoeing at Dodge Ridge and areas around Pinecrest. There is ice skating at Long Barn, 5 miles east of Twain Harte. Note that Hwy 108 is closed for the winter, generally November to May, 6 miles east of Strawberry (which is just beyond Pinecrest).

The Foothills
Sonora and Columbia have much Gold Rush history and renowned repertory theaters. Columbia State Historic Park has preserved as it was much of the Gold Rush town of Columbia. Jamestown has a 1900-era downtown and the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, where you can tour the roundhouse and, May-October, ride on a steam train.

Yosemite
Yosemite National Park is about an 85 mile drive from Twain Harte. Take Highway 108 west and turn left onto Hwy 49 a few miles east of Jamestown, which will run into Hwy 120. Hwy 120 will take you through Groveland and to the Big Oak Flat entrance to t
